If your competitors are being recommended by ChatGPT while your brand is missing, the reason could be gaps in your content, limited visibility across relevant sources, or the way AI associates your brand with specific user needs. Different AI platforms also rely on different sources. In a Clamint study analyzing 12,678 AI-generated responses, we found that 56% of ChatGPT and Gemini responses to the same questions had no sources in common.

This finding helps explain why your brand might perform well on Google but still fall behind competitors on ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity. Each platform can use different sources and recommend different brands.

So why does ChatGPT recommend your competitors? How can you find out which brands AI compares you with? And how can you measure how often your competitors are recommended compared to your brand?

At Clamint, our research into AI visibility helps us answer these questions using real data. In this guide, we'll share findings from our research, explain how to analyze competitors in AI search, and walk through the steps you can take to improve your brand's visibility.

ChatGPT and other AI platforms use information learned during training and, when available, sources they can access online to answer user questions. The sources they use can vary depending on the platform and the question being asked.

For example, when someone asks, "What are the best CRM tools for small businesses?", AI might list products it considers relevant to that need. Your competitor could appear in the recommendations while your brand is left out entirely.

There are several possible reasons for this.

Your competitors may be more strongly associated with relevant topics

AI systems can use information about a brand's product features, use cases, target audience, and presence across different sources when generating recommendations.

If your competitor has detailed content covering specific use cases, that content may be used to answer related questions.

Your website, on the other hand, might focus mainly on general product features. If it doesn't clearly explain which customer problems your product solves, your brand may be less likely to appear in relevant responses.

Your competitors may appear across more sources

AI platforms can use independent product reviews, comparison articles, industry publications, and customer feedback alongside information published on company websites.

A December 2025 study examining 75,000 brands found a strong positive correlation of approximately 0.737 between brand mentions on YouTube and AI visibility.

This suggests that a brand's presence across different digital channels may be related to its visibility in AI-generated responses. However, more YouTube mentions alone do not guarantee more AI recommendations.

Your content may not clearly answer users' questions

Questions such as "What does product X do?", "What's the difference between X and Y?", or "Which solution is better for small businesses?" are common during the buying process.

Your website should provide clear answers to these questions. Explain your product's features, use cases, and the specific needs it addresses in language that is easy to understand.

Even if your existing content answers these questions, AI may still prefer your competitors' pages as sources. In that case, it's worth investigating why those sources are being selected before creating additional content.

Clamint Research: Do AI Platforms Use the Same Sources?

In our research comparing ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, we analyzed 12,678 responses generated from 1,368 unique questions covering 36 brands.

ChatGPT used approximately one-third as many unique source domains per response as Gemini and Perplexity.

We also compared the sources used by different platforms. The average source overlap between ChatGPT and Gemini was 5.2%, while the overlap between Gemini and Perplexity was 11.9%.

These findings show why brands should evaluate their AI visibility separately for each platform.

For example, one of your competitors might be recommended regularly on ChatGPT, while your brand appears more frequently on Gemini. Understanding which sources each platform relies on can help you make better decisions about your visibility strategy.

Does being cited mean your brand is being recommended?

A study published in June 2026 found that approximately 62% of the AI citations examined did not include an explicit mention of the cited brand in the response text.

Your website might be used as a source by ChatGPT, but users reading the response may never see your brand name.

In our Clamint research, we also examined where brands appeared within AI-generated responses. The percentage of brand mentions appearing in the first 25% of a response was 52.29% for ChatGPT, 44.85% for Gemini, and 62.08% for Perplexity.

That's why it's important to measure how often your brand is mentioned, how frequently it is recommended, and whether your website is being cited as a source.

How Can I See Which Competitors AI Compares My Brand With?

Your competitors in AI search may be different from the companies you track in traditional market analysis or Google search results.

A product you don't consider a direct competitor might still be presented by ChatGPT as an alternative that addresses the same customer need.

To understand your actual competitive landscape in AI search, start with the questions your potential customers are asking.

Identify the questions your customers are asking

The first step is to identify the questions potential customers might ask when researching products, comparing alternatives, or making purchasing decisions.

For example, a company operating in the AI visibility space could examine questions such as:

How can I measure my brand's visibility on ChatGPT?
What are the best AI visibility tools?
Which platforms can I use to analyze competitors in AI search?
How can I find out how often my competitors are recommended by ChatGPT?
Why isn't my brand appearing in AI-generated responses?

Separate questions that include your brand name from those that don't. This will help you understand how AI describes your brand directly and how often it includes you in general product recommendations.

Analyze which brands appear together in AI responses

By examining responses from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, you can identify which brands are recommended together.

Which competitors appear most frequently? Which alternatives are mentioned alongside your brand? In which use cases do competitors stand out? Which products are recommended when your brand is missing?

Tracking these patterns regularly gives you a clearer picture of your actual competitors in AI search.

With Clamint, you can analyze the questions in which your brand and competitors are mentioned, the sources used in responses, and whether brands are discussed positively, negatively, or neutrally.

This helps you understand which competitors AI compares your brand with and where you're falling behind, based on actual response data.

How Can I Measure Whether My Competitors Are Recommended More Often on ChatGPT?

To find out whether competitors are recommended more frequently than your brand, you need to compare AI responses to the same set of questions.

Start by defining the topics and questions you want to track. Then measure how often your brand and competitors appear in the responses.

Which metrics should you use to measure AI brand visibility?

MetricWhat it measures

Brand visibility rateThe percentage of responses that mention your brand

Recommendation rateThe percentage of responses that explicitly recommend your brand

Share of mentionsYour brand's share of total mentions across tracked brands

Position in the responseWhere your brand appears within an AI-generated answer

Citation rateHow often your website is cited as a source

How do you calculate brand visibility rate?

Brand Visibility Rate = (Number of responses mentioning your brand / Total responses analyzed) × 100

For example, imagine you're analyzing 100 AI-generated responses.

Your brand appears in 30 responses, Competitor A appears in 55, and Competitor B appears in 42.

Your visibility rates would be 30%, 55%, and 42%, respectively.

In this example, Competitor A has a visibility rate 25 percentage points higher than yours.

However, a brand mention doesn't always mean a recommendation. A product could also appear in a negative comparison. That's why you should count explicit recommendations separately.

To calculate your share of mentions, divide the total number of mentions of your brand by the combined mentions of all the brands you're tracking.

Why should you measure visibility regularly?

AI-generated responses can change over time.

In Clamint's research, we tracked responses over 52 days and observed changes of approximately 13% to 15% between consecutive brand visibility measurements.

This means a single ChatGPT response isn't enough to conclude that a competitor consistently has better visibility than your brand.

Run weekly or monthly measurements. Use the same set of questions, language, country, and AI platform to make your comparisons more reliable.

How Can You Close the AI Visibility Gap Between Your Brand and Competitors?

Once you know which questions your competitors are being recommended for, you can investigate why your brand isn't appearing.

Not every visibility gap has the same cause. Some questions may require new content, while others may be better addressed by improving existing pages or strengthening your brand's presence on independent websites.

1. Find questions where competitors are recommended but your brand isn't

Start by identifying questions where competitors appear in AI recommendations while your brand is missing.

We call this a query visibility gap. It occurs when a competitor is recommended for a particular user question, but your brand doesn't receive the same visibility.

For example, if a competitor is regularly recommended for "What are the best CRM tools for small businesses?" while your brand never appears, you have a visibility gap for that question.

Prioritize questions that indicate a strong intent to purchase. Product comparisons, searches for alternatives, and questions about specific use cases are particularly relevant during the buying process.

With Clamint, you can identify questions where competitors are recommended but your brand is missing. This helps you see exactly which topics and questions need attention.

2. Investigate why your brand isn't appearing

Once you've identified visibility gaps, don't rush into creating new content. First, investigate why your brand isn't being recommended.

There are three common situations you may encounter.

Scenario 1: You don't have a page that answers the question.

Your website may not have a product page, service page, blog article, or guide that addresses the user's question.

In this case, creating new content may be the right approach. Before deciding what to publish, examine which pages AI is already using to answer that question.

Scenario 2: You have a relevant page, but AI isn't citing it.

Your website may contain content that answers the question, yet ChatGPT cites your competitor's page instead.

Compare your content with the competitor's.

Does their page cover the topic in greater detail? Does it include more recent information? Does it provide a clearer answer to the user's question?

Try to understand why the competitor's page is being selected. Improving an existing page may be more effective than publishing another one.

Scenario 3: Your page is cited, but your brand isn't recommended.

AI may cite a page from your website while recommending a competitor in the response.

In this situation, your page might explain the topic without clearly connecting your brand to the user's needs.

You may need to explain your product's use cases, the problems it solves, and who it's suitable for more clearly.

Each of these situations calls for a different approach. Understanding the reason behind a visibility gap helps you avoid creating content that doesn't address the actual problem.

3. Examine which sources lead to competitor recommendations

When investigating visibility gaps, pay attention to the sources AI uses when recommending competitors.

Is AI citing your competitor's own website? Is it using a product comparison page? Or is the recommendation based on an independent customer review?

You can group these sources into three categories:

Content on the brand's own website: Product pages, blog articles, guides, research reports, and comparison pages.

Content published by the brand on other platforms: Social media posts, YouTube videos, and brand-created content published on external websites.

Independent sources: Customer reviews, product comparisons, review platforms, forum discussions, and industry publications.

For example, if your competitor's blog article is frequently cited, you can compare its content with your own pages.

But if your competitor is being recommended based on independent product reviews, publishing another blog article on your own website may not have the same effect. In that case, improving your brand's presence in independent publications and review platforms may be more relevant.

4. Identify recurring source preferences

Looking at the sources used in a single response may not tell you enough.

Examine which websites, types of content, and publications appear repeatedly across similar questions.

This can help you understand which sources AI platforms tend to use for particular topics.

In Clamint's research, we observed significant differences in source preferences across platforms. The percentage of responses citing at least one community source, such as Reddit, YouTube, or forums, was 2.5% for ChatGPT, 44% for Gemini, and 52% for Perplexity.

Perplexity

These differences show why source preferences should be analyzed separately for each platform and group of questions.

5. Choose the right action based on your findings

After examining visibility gaps and the sources used in AI responses, you can decide which improvements to prioritize.

If you don't have a page that answers the question, you can create new content.

If an existing page is less comprehensive or less up to date than a competitor's, you can improve its depth, accuracy, or clarity.

If your page is cited but your brand isn't recommended, you can make the connection between your product and the user's needs clearer.

If competitors are being recommended through independent sources, you can focus on improving your brand's presence in industry publications, product comparisons, and customer review platforms.

The goal is to choose actions based on the reasons behind each visibility gap.

Clamint helps you examine visibility gaps and related sources, identify missing content, and plan improvements based on what the data reveals.

6. Track the results of your changes regularly

Improving AI visibility requires ongoing measurement. Even if you've taken the right steps, your brand may not start appearing in relevant recommendations immediately.

That's why it's important to repeat your analysis after making changes.

Revisit the visibility gaps you originally identified. Has your brand started appearing for those questions? Are competitors still being recommended at the same frequency? Is your website now being cited as a source?

Review source preferences again as well. The sources contributing to competitor recommendations may have changed over time.

After creating or updating content, track your citation rate and brand recommendation rate separately.

Getting your page cited is a positive sign. However, you should also check whether AI is recommending your brand to users.

Avoid judging success based on a single positive response. Repeat the same measurements over time to understand whether visibility is actually improving.

Clamint allows you to manage these analyses from one platform. You can identify questions where your brand is missing, examine the sources behind competitor recommendations, explore content opportunities, and track how your actions affect visibility over time.

If your competitors are recommended more frequently on ChatGPT, it doesn't necessarily mean their products are better than yours. The visibility gap may be related to several factors, from the depth of your content to the sources AI platforms choose to use.

To reduce that gap, start by identifying the questions where your brand is falling behind. Then examine your existing content, the sources competitors are being cited from, and how your brand appears in AI-generated responses.

Use these findings to make improvements and continue measuring your visibility. If the first changes don't produce immediate results, that doesn't necessarily mean your efforts have failed.
